Augusta, GA - July 08, 2025
Augusta Technical College is proud to announce a new partnership with Columbia County Fire Rescue to provide its firefighters with the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire & Emergency Services Occupation. This program is designed specifically for current Columbia County Fire Rescue employees, giving them access to advanced education that enhances their capabilities and strengthens the department as a whole.
The five-term, 64-credit program will allow participating firefighters to achieve additional certifications, including Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and Advanced EMT (AEMT). Through a combination of academic instruction, hands-on training, and real-world clinical experience, this program will expand the skill set of our department’s personnel and elevate the level of service provided to Columbia County residents.
“This opportunity reflects our commitment to growing from within,” said Fire Chief Jeremy Wallen. “By investing in the continued education of our firefighters, we’re not only building a stronger department—we’re also ensuring that Columbia County continues to receive top-tier fire and emergency medical services from highly trained professionals.”
Unlike traditional enrollment, this degree program is available exclusively to individuals already employed by Columbia County Fire Rescue, reinforcing the department’s dedication to career development, retention, and long-term workforce excellence.
“This partnership exemplifies the mission of Augusta Technical College— providing accessible, high-quality education that meets the needs of our community and workforce. We are proud to collaborate with Columbia County Fire Rescue in creating a pathway that empowers their firefighters to grow professionally while continuing to serve the citizens of Columbia County with excellence," stated Interim President Dr. Melissa Frank-Alston.
The program combines classroom learning, hands-on training, and clinical experience to fully prepare students for entry-level firefighter and EMT-A roles.
