Paine College Announce Date for Annual Tri-College
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration


Augusta, GA - January 4, 2023

Dr. Lewis BaldwinAugusta Technical College, Augusta University, and Paine College are proud to announce Dr. Lewis Baldwin as the keynote speaker for the 2023 Martin Luther King, Jr. annual tri-college birthday celebration.

Lewis V. Baldwin is a historian, author, and professor specializing in the history of the black churches in the United States. He is an acknowledged expert on the Spencer Churches, the oldest black denominations in the country. He holds the title of professor emeritus at Vanderbilt University, where he has taught for several decades.

A native of Alabama’s so-called “Blackbelt”, Baldwin is recognized internationally as a prolific scholar, having written some sixty articles and several books on African Methodism. He has also written extensively on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr, including: A Nation in Search of Drum Majors: Martin Luther King, Jr., Ethical Leadership, and the Challenges of Trumpism; The Black Zeitgeist: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Africa; In Search of the Promised Land: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Use of the Old Testament (with Herbert R. Marbury), and Dr. Baldwin's most recent book, entitled: The Ways of Truth: The Thinking of Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Paine College is pleased to be the host site for the 2023 annual Tri-College celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr. For many years, Augusta Technical College, Augusta University, and Paine College have joined together to co-host the celebration of this 'warrior for justice' who dedicated his life toward nonviolence, freedom, equality, and justice," said Paine College President Cheryl Evans Jones. "The speaker, Dr. Lewis V. Baldwin, is a well-known scholar on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through his work, Dr. Baldwin encourages us to listen to the words of Dr. King and embody his message in our lives to create the kind of society of which Dr. King dreamed."

Keel, PhD. “Dr. Baldwin has shown his dedication to civil rights through a long career of ministerial work and scholarship as he honors Dr. King’s legacy. We are proud to co-host this event to encourage the spirit of service upheld by Dr. King and inspire future generations to engage our community as we fulfill Augusta University’s mission to provide quality education and health care opportunities to all.”

"Augusta Technical College is honored to celebrate the 55th year celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin King Jr., in fellowship with our friends at Augusta University and Paine College," stated Augusta Technical College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl. "We look forward to commemorating his ideas, principles, and values regarding love, justice, and peace at this year’s annual event."

The topic for Dr. Baldwin's address will be "The Forgotten Legacy: Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. in a Post-Truth Age."

"The epic figure of Martin Luther King, Jr. looms large over our nation, reminding us that we cannot continue to prosper and survive in a culture in which objective truths and scientific facts seem to no longer matter," stated Dr. Baldwin.

The 2023 Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 12:00pm at Paine College Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel . The program is open to the public and will also be streamed via Zoom.
