Augusta Technical College’s Adult Education Program offers free classes in the areas of Adult Literacy, High School Equivalency preparation, and English as a Second Language (ESL). The Adult Education Program also offers classes for those who hold a Degree or Diploma seeking additional learning support. Augusta Technical College currently offers Adult Education classes in Burke, Columbia, Lincoln, McDuffie, and Richmond counties.

How to Register for Classes

Students seeking to enter the Adult Education Program are required to complete registration, orientation, and TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) or BEST Literacy (ESL) testing.

Students interested in attending classes at any Richmond County or Columbia County Site must register in the Adult Education Admissions Office, located at the Augusta Technical College Main Campus – Building 300, Room 305. The Adult Education Main Office is open Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Students interested in attending classes at any Burke, Lincoln, or McDuffie County Site will need to directly call the site during the times listed on the Adult Education Sites page. You may also contact the Main Office in Augusta for more information at 706-771-4131.

Registration Reminders:

  • Adult Education Classes are free to attend
  • Students may come anytime during office hours to register
  • Orientation and TABE Testing are held every week
  • BEST Literacy Testing twice per month
  • Individuals 18 and over will need:
    • Valid Legal Picture Identification to include:
      • State Issued ID

    • Withdrawal form from the last school attended on school letterhead
    • Parents’ Permission form (available in office)

Requirements for GED Testing

Anyone who is interested in taking the GED® exam must create an account and register at GED.com. The GED® test is $160 total for the complete exam or $40 for each of the individual 4 sections (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies). The testing fee is payable online by a credit or debit card. Please note: the minimal passing score for each part is 145.

Upon successful completion of the GED® Test, the GED® graduate will receive a GED® diploma and a HOPE GED® Voucher for $500 (must be a Georgia Resident). This voucher may be used to pursue further education at any Georgia accredited technical college or university.

Requirements for HiSet® Testing

Anyone who is interested in taking the HiSET® exam must create an account and schedule the exam at hiset.ets.org. The HiSET® test is $133.75 (in-person) or $181.25 (online) total for the complete exam and $26.75 for each of the individual 5 sections (Language Arts - Reading, Language Arts - Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies). The testing fee is payable online by a credit or debit card. Please note: the minimal passing score for each subtest is 8-out-of-20, for the essay it is 2-out-of-6, and the total scale score is 45. All subtests must be in the same language.

Upon successful completion of the HiSET® Test, the HiSET® graduate will receive their transcript and/or diploma by mail within 2-3 weeks from the test date. GED® & HiSET® Transcript/Diploma Request Information 

Official transcript(s) and duplicate diploma(s) may be requested for test-takers who took a GED® test or HiSET® exam and/or earned a High School Equivalency Diploma in Georgia. A fee of $15 per document is required. Anyone other than the test-taker requesting these documents must attach a signed release from the test-taker.

The Adult Education Program offers classes to Underage Youth – individuals who are 16 or 17 years of age who have officially withdrawn from public, private, or home school.

Eligibility Enrollment Requirements

  1. Complete the first page of the Underage Youth Application for Program Enrollment and Permission to Take the GED® Test application, to include a completed Parent/Guardian Permission to Enroll/Take the GED Test section. (form located at all Adult Education Locations)
  2. Submit withdrawal forms from the last school attended
  3. Provide legal identification with proof of age

Recommendation and Approval for GED Testing

In order to receive a recommendation to take the GED® Test, 16 and 17 year olds must:

  1. Attend class(es) for the required minimum number of hours to be post-tested and take at least one post-test.
  2. Score at least a 9.0 grade equivalent on the D or A level TABE assessment in Reading, Math, and Language.

(Once steps 1 and 2 are completed, the program is able to administer a GED® practice test.)

  1. Take the GED Ready™ or Aztec’s GED Practice Test and achieve the set scores.
  • The student will schedule a time to create a profile at GED.com. Then, he/she must take the GED Ready™ practice test and score at least a 150 on two of the four subtests.
  • The student will schedule a time to create a login/password for Aztec. Then, he/she must take Aztec’s GED® Practice Tests and score 60% or higher on two of the four subtests.
  1. Agree to maintain enrollment in the adult education program through the successful completion of GED® Testing.
