Instructor Dr. Nader Copty Building 800, Room 843 Telephone: 706-771-4123 E-mail: ncopty@augustatech.edu Basic Guidelines The following rules are intended to provide each student with a set of basic guidelines for appropriate laboratory behavior. If they are followed, then the student's risk of injury will be reduced. Since it is impossible to anticipate every possible situation before it occurs or eliminate every hazard, it is necessary for each student to: (1) be alert, (2) be cautious, (3) be self reliant, and (4) use common sense. When an experiment is performed involving hazards not covered in the general guidelines, your instructor will inform you of any additional safety rules. Safety Rules - Do not smoke, eat, or drink in the laboratory.
- Carry out your laboratory quietly. No horseplay or other distracting behavior in the laboratory.
- Do not block the exits and aisles.
- Be aware of where the fire extinguisher and the first aid kit are located. Do not place objects in front of them that would reduce their visibility or accessibility.
- Keep your work area clean and orderly. Clean up any spilled liquids as quickly as possible. Be sure your work area is free of paper or other litter. Place any trash in the trash can.
- Unless otherwise notified, each laboratory group is responsible for putting their laboratory equipment away appropriately.
- If using a computer, close out all programs and documents, and shut your computer down properly.
- The computers in this lab are to be used for class work only. Research and surfing using the World Wide Web/Internet should be done at the ITC computer lab.
- If the potential exists for objects to become airborne, then the use of safety glasses is indicated.
- Do not wear loose clothing or neck ties around machines with rotating or translating elements.
- Do not wear loose jewelry or open-toed shoes in the laboratory.
- Do not lift objects with weight exceeding 25 lbs without the proper equipment.
- Do not attempt to use a piece of equipment without reading instructions. If anything unusual happens, immediately bring the problem to the attention of the instructor.
- Report any laboratory injury to the instructor immediately.
