News and Notes Archives Association of Surgical Technologists Holds Bi-Annual Meeting at Augusta Tech The Georgia State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists held their bi-annual meeting at Augusta Tech. Gene Burke Receives Visionary Award Gene Burke was recognized by his peers at the State Assembly meeting for the Association of Surgical Technologists. President Featured in "Pillars of Augusta" Magazine President Elam is featured in the May 2008 edition of "Pillars of Augusta." Tommy Lyles' Healing Patience Sculpture Unveiled at Walton Rehabilitation Hospital A sculpture, in honor of the healing practitioners and staff at Walton Rehab, was unveiled by artist and instructor Tommy Lyles. President Named to Augusta's Power List A recent ASU graduate survey identified Augusta's most powerful people. Augusta Tech Hosts SkillsUSA Transition Team Meeting Augusta Tech was the site of the recent meeting of the SkillsUSA transition team meeting. East Central GOAL Consortium Held at Augusta Tech The GOAL winners from six technical colleges participated in the East Central GOAL Comsortium held at Augusta Tech. Service Awards Presented Service awards were presented severn employees during the spring faculty and staff meeting Organization Advisor Receives Service Award from National Office of Phi Theta Kappa Dr. Joan Puryear was recognized for 15 years of service to Phi Theta Kappa. Burke and McDuffie County Campuses Support Relay for Life Over $3,300 has been raised to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Burke Campus Holds Open House The Burke County Campus of Augusta Tech held an Open House on May 1st. Monsanto Awards Grant Monsanto representatives awarded a $2,500 grant in support of equipment purchases for CADTEC. Nixon Cabin to be Featured in Documentary The Nixon cabin was the setting for an interview with 100 year old Sister Clare of the Convent of St. Helena. Sister Clare was one of many nuns who lived in the cabin during the 1960's. College Hosts "Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day" The children of several staff members learned what their parent did at work today during the annual "Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day." Early Childhood Development Conference Held at Augusta Tech The 20th annual Early Childhood Development Conference was held at Augusta Tech on April 19th. College Holds Open House Event Students from across the CSRA attended the annual Open House event to learn more about opportunities Augusta Technical College has to offer. Students Participate in Career Day 2008 The Career Services Department at Augusta Tech sponsored the spring Career Day and Job Fair for students. Planters EMC Funds Grant for GED Scholarships Planters EMC Oepration Round Up grants program is funding a grant of $2,375 to fund GED Scholarships to students in Burke County. Rocky Creek Spring Festival was a Success The 2008 Rocky Creek Spring Festival was a success. GOAL Winner and Finalists Honored at Luncheon Charlene Hardy and other GOAL finalists were honored at a college luncheon on April 23. Augusta Tech SkillsUSA Students Bring Home Medals Several members of Augusta Tech's SkillsUSA Chapter brought home medals from the recent State SkillsUSA Post Secondary Competition. North Columbia Fire and Rescue Donates $20,000 for Endowments North Columbia Fire and Rescue has donated $20,000 in support of Augusta Technical College's Fire Science and EMT/Paramedic Program. Georgia Trend Features Article on Technical Colleges Read the April 2008 edition of Georgia Trend that features the article called "Matching Supply to Demand." The John and Mary Franklin Foundation Approve $10,000 Grant The Franklin Foundation has approved a $10,000 grant to fund GED Scholarships. Augusta Chronicle Feature Highlights Dual Enrollment Partnership with A.R. Johnson The Augusta Chronicle featured a story on the College's Dual Enrollment program with A.R. Johnson Magnet School. Sommers Presents Wartime Flag to Augusta Technical College Terrance Sommers, a Criminal Justice Instructor and U.S. Army Reservist, presented a wartime flag to President Terry Elam. Student Receives Medical Assisting Scholarship Melissa Edison received a scholarship from the Lisa Nagle Medical Assisting Scholarship Endowment established by Dr. Paul Fischer. Thomson Campus Holds Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony Nineteen students were pinned during the 2008 Practical Nursing pinning ceremony held at the Thomson campus. Practical Nursing Students Hold Blood Drive Practical Nursing students collected 37 pints of blood for the American Red Cross. 2008 Graduates of the Cardiovascular Technology Program Receive Pins The graduates of the 2008 Cardiovascular Technology Program received their pins in a ceremony held on March 7th at University Hospital. Youth Leadership Students Visit Working Artist Members of Youth Leadership group had an opportunity to visit a working artist's studio during Culture and Art Day. Junior Achievement Students Visit Augusta Tech 50 Junior Achievement students visited Augusta Tech to learn about different careers. Charlene Hardy Named GOAL Student of the Year Charlene Hardy, an Occupational Therapy Assisting student, was selected as the GOAL Student of the Year by the Optimist Club of Augusta. Medical Assisting Students Complete Annual Blood Project Thirty participants completed the annual blood project conducted by the 2008 Senior Medical Assisting students. Bench Honors Child A memorial bench was placed in front of the 500 building honoring the memory of Shakayla Hawes.
