News and Notes Archives Thomson Campus Holds Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony Nineteen students were pinned during the 2008 Practical Nursing pinning ceremony held at the Thomson campus. Practical Nursing Students Hold Blood Drive Practical Nursing students collected 37 pints of blood for the American Red Cross. 2008 Graduates of the Cardiovascular Technology Program Receive Pins The graduates of the 2008 Cardiovascular Technology Program received their pins in a ceremony held on March 7th at University Hospital. Youth Leadership Students Visit Working Artist Members of Youth Leadership group had an opportunity to visit a working artist's studio during Culture and Art Day. Junior Achievement Students Visit Augusta Tech 50 Junior Achievement students visited Augusta Tech to learn about different careers. Charlene Hardy Named GOAL Student of the Year Charlene Hardy, an Occupational Therapy Assisting student, was selected as the GOAL Student of the Year by the Optimist Club of Augusta. Medical Assisting Students Complete Annual Blood Project Thirty participants completed the annual blood project conducted by the 2008 Senior Medical Assisting students. Bench Honors Child A memorial bench was placed in front of the 500 building honoring the memory of Shakayla Hawes. Augusta Tech Raises $12,278 for United Way In the annual campaign for United Way led by Dalton Thacker, Augusta Tech employees generously donated $12,278 in support of many worthy agencies. Four Students Named as Semi-finalists for GOAL Competition Four students will advance to the external judging competition for GOAL. GOAL Nominees Attend Their First Orientation The GOAL nominated students attended their first orientation. They received advice from David Towles and Patsy Finch, the 2007 Student of the Year and his nominating instructor. 27 Students Qualify for GOAL Instructors have nominated 27 students for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL). LPN Book Scholarships Sponsored for a Second Year Mr. and Mrs. Ken Simmons are sponsoring a second year of LPN Book Scholarships. Mortgage and Foreclosure Workshop Held on Campus U.S. Representative John Barrow's office held a mortgage and foreclosure workshop on the campus of Augusta Tech on January 26th. Student Leadership Council Helps Celebrate Grand Re-Opening of the Cafeteria The Student Leadership Council helped celebrate the grand re-opening of the campus cafeteria on January 29th with free cake, popcorn, sodas and cookies provided by the new food service provider. Wellness Fairs Scheduled for February Wellness Fairs have been scheduled for each campus during the month of February. Videography Class Participates in the National Veterans History Project Videography students are learning a great deal about World War II history from first hand accounts shared by veterans who are participating in a national project to record their war stories. Gwinn Huxley Nixon Scholarship Endowment Established The Gwinn Huxley Nixon Scholarship Endowment has been established with a $25,000 gift to the Augusta Tech Foundation by Dr. Sally Nixon Hand in honor of her father. Skills USA Helps Collect Toys for Tots The Skills USA Student Chapter at Augusta Technical College helped collect toys to benefit the Marine Corps' annual Toys for Tots Drive. New Members Initiated into Phi Theta Kappa New members were initiated into Phi Theta Kappa at a ceremony featuring guest speaker, Mrs. Janice Richardson. Larry Jones Named Chamber of Commerce 2007 Small Business Person of the Year Larry Jones, the owner of Universal Plumbing and a member of the Augusta Technical College Foundation Board of Directors, was named Small Business Person of the Year. Kellogg Company Plant Presents Augusta Technical College with $10,000 Grant Plant Manager Jay Kuhn presented Augusta Tech President Terry Elam with a $10,000 grant check for the college's business and industry training programs. Community Foundation Awards $10,000 Toolbox Scholarship Grant to the Augusta Tech Foundation The Augusta Technical College Foundation is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant for toolbox scholarships by the Community Foundation.
