Hegler Elected President Elect of GA AHEAD Marty Hegler has been elected the President Elect for the Georgia Association on Higher Education and Disability. Tommy Lyles and Youth Leadership Donate Sculpture Tommy Lyles, a Welding and Joining Instructor, and Columbia County's Youth Leadership students created a sculpture and donated it to the Columbia County Board of Education. Career Fair Scheduled for April 17 The Office of Career Services will hold a career fair on April 17th from 9:00am to 12 noon in the 1300 building. David Towles Named GOAL Student of the Year for 2007 David Towles was selected as the 2007 GOAL Student of the Year by the Optimist Club of Augusta. Blood Drive Held on March 12th Nursing students conducted a blood drive on the main campus of Augusta Tech. Augusta Tech Raises Over $13,000 for United Way Tommy Lyles, the campus coordinator for the annual fund drive for United Way, is pleased to announce that we raised $13,180.76. Augusta Tech Motorcycle is Now on Display The Augusta Tech motorcycle, built by the Welding and Joining Technology Program, is now on display in building 100. Augusta Tech Announces Cardiovascular Technology Pinning Ceremony Augusta Technical College and the Harry T. Harper, Jr., M.D. School of Cardio and Vascular Technology is pleased to announce the 2007 Pinning Ceremony. Augusta Tech Featured in Augusta Chronicle College board member and owner of Universal Plumbing, Mr. Larry Jones, was featured in an article that appeared in the Augusta Chronicle's new business insert. Also featured prominently in the Augusta Chronicle this weekend was our Fire Science program. Financial Aid Conducts Awareness Fair The Office of Financial Aid held a financial aid awareness day on March 1st to encourage students to complete their financial aid packets early. 2007 GOAL Finalists Announced Augusta Technical College announced the top 4 local contenders for the 2007 GOAL competition. Brookwood Elementary Fifth Grader Wins Third Place in MAW Design Contest Haley Almodovar, a 5th grader at Brookwood Elementary, is a third place winner in the MAW Design Contest in the placemat category. Milsco and Kellogg Nominated as Manufacturers of the Year Milsco and Kellogg have been nominated by Augusta Technical College in the categories of Small and Medium Manufacturers of the Year, respectively. The statewide winners will be announced April 12th in Atlanta at the annual Manufacturing Appreciation Week banquet. Area School Superintendents Sign Articulation Agreements Area school superintendents sign articulation agreements with Augusta Tech so that high school students can earn college credit with attending high school. Ken and Ruth Simmons Establish LPN Book Scholarships Ken and Ruth Simmons have established two LPN book scholarships, valued at $500 each, in memory of Philip Walsh and Nancy Simmons. Local Cosmetology Student Receives Design Award from International Stylist, Artist David Towles, a third-quarter cosmetology student at Augusta Technical College and resident of North Augusta recently received a design award from internationally renowned Toronto-based platform artist and educator Martin Parsons. Students Earn 100% Pass Rate on National EKG Certification Exam Wren Clarke, an Allied Health instructor on the Burke County campus, is pleased to announce that her students earned a 100% pass rate on the national certification exam for Electrocardiography Technologists. New Trustees Join Foundation Board in April Three new trustees will be joining the foundation board in April. They include Dr. Melissa Frank-Alston, Mr. Bill Condon of Washington Savannah River Company, and Mr. Jim Champion of the Martinez Fire Department. Augusta Tech Participates in Second Annual Taste of the Technical College Augusta Tech's Media Communications and Printing and Graphics programs were featured at the annual event for legislators and invited guests. Service Awards Presented Several members of the faculty and staff were presented with service awards. Topping the list with 30 years of service was Vera McDowell, an Allied Health Instructor. Barbara Williams Dental Assisting Scholarship Presented to Malica Himes Malica Himes, a dental assisting student on the main campus of Augusta Tech, is the 2007 recipient of the Barbara Williams Dental Assisting Scholarship. Georgia House and Senate Declare January 30 as Technical College System of Georgia Day Both the Georgia House and Senate have respectively passed HR86 and SR84 which effectively recognizes January 30th as Technical College System of Georgia Day. DTAE and MCG Share Knowledge DTAE leadership summit attendees visited MCG on January 10th to discuss programs of mutual interest. Burke and Peel Join College Board of Directors Ms. Janie Peel and Ms. Alana Burke officially joined the Augusta Technical College Board of Directors on November 30. Young Adult Advisory Board Opportunity with Augusta Metro Federal Credit Union If you are a student between the ages of 18 and 25 with a GPA of a 3.0 or higher, have leadership skills, and are interested in serving on an Advisory Board once a month, you may be the perfect candidate for a position on the Augusta Metro Federal Credit Union's Young Adult Advisory Board. Winner Announced in Heart Association Cruise Drawing Congratulations to Dr. Lucretia Parham whose name was drawn as the winner of the American Heart Association Cruise. Employees who raised over $100 had their name entered into the drawing. American Red Cross Blood Drive Held on Campus The American Red Cross in partnership with the Practical Nursing Students held a blood drive on campus. Faculty, staff and students donated blood and also received free blood pressure check-ups. Foundation Receives a $2500 Grant to Fund GED Scholarships Washington Savannah River Company donated $2,500 in support of GED Scholarships to the Augusta Technical College Foundation. Foundation Receives Year-End Gift of $25,000 The Augusta Technical College Foundation received a very nice Christmas gift in the form of a $25,000 year-end gift from long-time foundation trustee, Mr. Ric Lichtenberg of Samson Manufacturing in Waynesboro. Skills USA Coordinates Annual Toys for Tots Drive The Skills USA student organization led by instructor, Andrew Jefferson, helped coordinate the local Toys for Tots drive at Augusta Tech. All three campuses participated. Augusta Tech Holds 2006 Graduation at the Bell Family an friends cheered for their graduate at the 2006 commencement activities hekd in December at the Bell Auditorium. Quincy Murphy served as the speaker. Rocky Creek Festival Scheduled for April 28th The second annual Rocky Creek Festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th. Widows Home of Augusta to Fund Scholarships The Widows Home of Augusta has partnered to provide scholarship support to three students enrolled in our Allied Health programs. Medical Assisting Endowment to be Funded to $100,000 Dr. Paul Fischer of the Center for Primary Care will fund the Medical Assisting Endowment to the $100,000 and will name the endowment after Lisa Nagle upon her retirement. Karen Dempsey Awarded First Medical Assisting Scholarship Karen Dempsey, a Medical Assisting student on the Augusta campus, was awarded the first Medical Assisting Scholarship from the endowment established by Dr. Paul Fischer of the Center for Primary Care.
