News and Notes Archives Gwinn Huxley Nixon Scholarship Endowment Established The Gwinn Huxley Nixon Scholarship Endowment has been established with a $25,000 gift to the Augusta Tech Foundation by Dr. Sally Nixon Hand in honor of her father. LPN Students Receive Their Pins During Burke Ceremony Five LPN students received their pins in a ceremony held on December 18th. Skills USA Helps Collect Toys for Tots The Skills USA Student Chapter at Augusta Technical College helped collect toys to benefit the Marine Corps' annual Toys for Tots Drive. New Members Initiated into Phi Theta Kappa New members were initiated into Phi Theta Kappa at a ceremony featuring guest speaker, Mrs. Janice Richardson. Larry Jones Named Chamber of Commerce 2007 Small Business Person of the Year Larry Jones, the owner of Universal Plumbing and a member of the Augusta Technical College Foundation Board of Directors, was named Small Business Person of the Year. Kellogg Company Plant Presents Augusta Technical College with $10,000 Grant Plant Manager Jay Kuhn presented Augusta Tech Preseident Terry Elam with a $10,000 grant check for the college's business and industry training programs. Augusta Tech Skills USA Chapter Attends Fall Leadership Conference Augusta Tech's Skills USA Chapter attended the fall leadership conference in Atlanta. Kellogg Receives Plaque for Manufacturer Appreciation Week Nomination Kellogg Plant Manager Jay Kuhn and members of Kellogg's marketing team were presented with a Manufacturing Appreciation Week plaque from Governor Perdue's office. Community Foundation Awards $10,000 Toolbox Scholarship Grant to the Augusta Tech Foundation The Augusta Technical College Foundation is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant for toolbox scholarships by the Community Foundation. Golovan and Thacker Continue Their Education Gary Golovan and Dalton Thacker continue to expand their education. OTA Students Participate in Hippotherapy Program for Special Needs Clients OTA students participated in the annual Blue Ribbon Riders Demonstration Day for special needs clients. New Program Chair for Mechanical Engineering Technology Joins College Meet Mike Weiksner, the new program chair for the MET Program. Augusta Tech Board Chair Elected Secretary of TCDA Tommie Aaron, the Board Chair of the Augusta Technical College Foundation Board of Directors, has been elected Secretary of the Technical College Directors Association. LPN Pinning Ceremony to be Held on Burke Campus December 18th The Waynesboro/Burke Campus of Augusta Technical College will hold its LPN Pinning Ceremony on December 18th at 1:00pm in the Burke County Auditorium. Phi Theta Kappa Initiation to be held December 4th Phi Theta Kappa will hold its annual initiation on December 4th beginning at 7:00pm in the 400 building cafeteria. Burke Campus Will Host Hair and Fashion Show on December 4th The Burke Campus will play host to a hair and fashion show on Tuesday, December 4th beginning at 6:30pm. Tommy Lyles Commissioned by Walton Rehab Hospital to Create Sculpture Our very own artist in residence and welding instructor Tommy Lyles has been commissioned to create a sculpture that will be housed on the grounds of Walton Rehab. Faculty Participated in YDC Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Dr. Melissa Frank-Alston and Mrs. Jo Anne Robinson participated in the YDC's ribbon cutting ceremony for their new building. Kevin Ward Reception Held November 20th Kevin Ward was honored with a reception by the faculty and staff of Augusta Tech for his win as the Rick Perkins Teacher of the Year. Phi Theta Kappa Initiation Scheduled for December 4th Students who meet the requirements of Phi Theta Kappa will be inducted into the Alpha Chi Chapter on the evening of December 4th. Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Scheduled for November 29th The annual Augusta Tech Holiday Tree Lighting is scheduled for November 29th in front of the 1300 building. Beverly Peltier Receives Outstanding Newcomer Award from Georgia Educational Advancement Council Beverly Peltier received the Outstanding Newcomer Award for Advancement Professionals at the GEAC Conference. Augusta Tech Paramedic Students on World Championship Fire Fighting Team The Fort Gordon Fire Fighting team, comprised of two students from Augusta Tech, won the title of World Championship Team. November 8th Declared Kevin Ward Day in Augusta By proclamation of the Mayor of Augusta, November 8th is Kevin Ward Day in Augusta. Career Fest Draws Large Crowd of Employers and Students The fall Career Fest brought together students and potential employers thanks to the hard work of the Career Services staff. Fort Gordon Celebrates American Education Week Fort Gordon will celebrate American Education Week beginning Tuesday, November 13th and running through Thursday, November 15th. Fall Fling 2007 Fall Fling was held on the main campus of Augusta Tech on November 3. Kevin Ward Receives State Proclamation Kevin Ward, Augusta Tech's Teacher of the Year, recently received a State Board Proclamation. Paramedic Students on Winning National Championship Fire Fighting Team at Fort Gordon Two Augusta Tech paramedic students and their fellow fire fighters have achieved a national title in fire fighting and will compete in Las Vegas at the World Championships. Monica Cunningham Wins Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest Monica Cunningham's SpongeBob Square Pants Pumpkin takes first place in the annual Augusta Tech Pumpkin Carving Contest. Junior Achievement Students Visit Augusta Tech A contingency of Junior Achievement students spent the day at Augusta Tech learning about technical education and career opportunities. Culinary Arts Students Display their Art of Chocolate The Augusta Technical College Culinary Arts department participated in the 12th Annual Art of Chocolate held at the Old Medical College. LPN Students Participate in Mock Drill LPN students had an opportunity to participate in a mock disaster drill at University Hospital. Augusta Tech Raises $3,052.53 for the American Heart Walk Augusta Tech faculty, staff and students raised over $3,000 to help fight heart disease in our community. Energy Forum Held on Augusta Tech Campus Area school system counselors and administrators attended an Energy Forum held at Augusta Tech. Service Awards Presented Twenty-six service awards were presented by President Terry Elam during the October faculty and staff meeting. Respiratory Therapy Technology Students Meet Dr. Forrest Bird Respiratory Therapy Technology students met Dr. Forrest Bird, the inventor of the Bird ventilators and the Babybird ventilators used throughout hospitals nationwide. Marty Hegler Celebrates Retirement On September 28th, friends and faculty said good-bye to Marty Hegler as she moved into her new stage of life as a retiree. Julie Langham Recognized by Thomson High School Julie Langham has been named a "Top Dog" by Thomson High School. President Terry Elam Named Community Champion by Neighborhood Improvement Project The Neighborhood Improvement Project named President Terry Elam a 2007 Community Champion in Education. Surgical Technology Students Participate in Proclamation Ceremony in Atlanta Terri Crosson and Stephanie Potter along with Program Chair Gene Burke attended the recent proclamation signing ceremony in Atlanta to recognize Surgical Technology Week in Georgia. Purification Cellutions and the MeadWestvaco Foundation Present Grant Purification Cellutions and the MeadWestvaco Foundation presented a $6,000 grant check to the Augusta Technical College Foundation. Expansion Management Magazine Ranks GA QuickStart Training Number 1 in the Nation Expansion Management Magazine conducted their annual poll of site location consultants and they ranked Georgia QuickStart Training as the number 1 business and industry training program in the nation. Augusta Tech Foundation Sponsors 5th Annual Retiree Brunch The 5th Annual Retiree Brunch and Campus Visit was sponsored by the Augusta Technical College Foundation on September 21st. Barbara Banning Elected Chairperson for Augusta Occupational Therapy District Association Barbara Banning will begin serving a two year term in January as Chairperson for the Augusta Occupational Therapy District Association. Thomson LPN Students Receive Pins LPN students from the Thomson campus received their nursing pins at a ceremony held in the Peter S. Knox Jr. Center for Technology at Augusta Tech. Lisa Nagle Presents at National Conference of the American Association of Medical Assistants Lisa Nagle presented her topic, "Successful Externships," at the national conference of the American Association of Medical Assistants. Medical Assisting Students Perform Physicals for Headstart Children Students from Augusta Tech's Medical Assisting Program were asked to assist with Head Start physicals for 3 and 4 year olds on September 13th at three area school locations. Medical Assisting Students Conduct Physicals for Head Start Program Medical Assisting students helped out Head Start by providing physicals for the 3 and 4 year olds entering the Head Start program this year. Augusta Tech Breaks Ground for a New Campus in Columbia County Augusta Technical College held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 14 for its new location in Columbia County. Kevin Ward Named Rick Perkins Teacher of the Year Kevin Ward, the Program Chair for the Marketing Management Department at Augusta Tech, was named the 2007 Rick Perkins Award Winner.
