Reading 097 - Reading III

Course Description

Emphasizes basic vocabulary and comprehension skills development. Topics include: vocabulary development, comprehension skills development, study skills, test-taking techniques, and occupational reading. The prerequisite for this course is RDG 096, or entrance reading score in accordance with approved DTAE admission score levels. *Lab may be substituted, as needed, for class hours on a 2 to 1 basis.

Vocabulary Development
Word attack Use a dictionary key for pronunciation of words.
Word analysis Use word part recognition to determine word meaning.
Context clues Use context clues to determine word meaning.
Comprehension Skills Development
Main idea Identify main idea and supporting details. (specifically and not specifically stated)
Sequence Determine sequence.
Inferences Make inferences.
Interpretation Read critically to determine information such as fact and opinion and author’s intent.
Study Skills
Study habits Use effective study habits.
Study techniques Use effective study techniques.
Information Locate information in textbooks and reference materials.
Test-Taking Techniques
Reading for objective/subjective tests Develop reading techniques that help prepare for objective/subjective test taking
Occupational Reading
Occupational materials Explore occupational materials.

  • Improving vocabulary skills, Goodman, D. J., Mohr, C. & Nist, S., (1990), Townsend Press.
  • A college desk dictionary (Any you choose–Not a paperback edition)

Grading Scale

Classroom evaluation will be based on the following:

  • Average of 10 reading & vocabulary tests 25%
  • Average of 10 weekly assigned readings 25%
  • Final exam 50%

Students’ final course grade will be one of the following:

  • SC–Satisfactory Completion
  • U–Unsatisfactory
  • W–Withdrawal
