Most career fields require individuals to pass a certification of some kind as a means of determining those who are qualified to work in that particular field. The certification usually involves taking a standardized test that is administered through an objective third-party. This means that even though your instructor thinks you are qualified to be a good nurse, you may not work as one until you have passed a national certification test. Likewise, you cannot take the test unless the instructor thinks that you can do the work, and this is generally represented by a passing grade for the quarter or a combination of quarter grades. This is the same process for every career field represented on this campus. The English Department is simply adopting the idea of certification as part of the final exam for all English 191 students. In this way, we will be doing our part to ensure that all students who pass English 191 have met the same fundamental requirements.
