We believe that maintaining and adhering to common standards is actually the best way to ensure fairness for all students. All of the instructors who grade the essays are the same instructors who teach the class. Each instructor may have a unique style or emphasis for class, but in the end all of the instructors who teach English 191 are following the same standards for writing and evaluating a college level essay. Grading an essay can be a very subjective process, and we believe that using a panel of graders to evaluate the final exam essay is the best way to ensure that all students are given fair and equitable treatment.

We understand that people have bad days. We understand that people can get nervous in a high-stakes testing situation. We have developed an appeal process for those students who feel that they have been treated unfairly as a result of the final exam essay process.
