Course Description

ENG 191, Composition and Rhetoric I 5-0-5 (Prerequisite: Admission to program) This course emphasizes the student’s ability to read literature analytically and to communicate clearly. Students will compose essays based upon established criteria. Essay strategies will include the following: narration, example, comparison / contrast, causal analysis and argumentation. In addition, students will review standard grammatical and stylistic usage in the writing process.

    2. Determine a well-written thesis statement for essays
    3. Determine appropriate organization for essays
    4. Determine appropriate main idea and supporting details for paragraphs

    1. Analyze essays for clarity, unity, coherence, logic, and style
    2. Modify essays to improve written communication
  3. Implement the major steps in conducting research
    1. Identify the major steps in conducting research
    2. Implement appropriate reference material for writing
  4. Compose well-developed expository essays
    1. Compose grammatically and mechanically correct sentences for paragraphs and essays
    2. Compose well-developed expository paragraphs and essays

  • Standard course materials should include the following: paper; pen; pencil; highlighter; 3x5 notecards; and a formatted, high-density computer disk, a collegiate dictionary

Grading Scale:

100-90 / A 89-80 / B 79-70 / C 69-60 / D Below 60 / F
Assignments are weighted as follows:

  • Out of class work 25%
  • In class work 25%

  • Final Exam 25%
