English 098

Course Description

This course emphasizes the ability to communicate using written and oral methods. Topics include: basic paragraph construction, proofreading, written reports, and oral reports. This is a five (5) institutional credit course. The prerequisite for this course is ENG 097, or entrance English score in accordance with approved DTAE admission score levels.

Competencies

Basic Paragraph Construction
Simple paragraphs Write a simple paragraph using a topic sentence/controlling idea, transitions, and supporting details.
Proofreading
Mechanics and grammatical errors Edit for mechanics (punctuation, capitalization, and spelling) and grammatical errors.
Revision Revise for style, organization, and development.
Written Reports
Extended paragraphs and simple essays Write logically organized, extended paragraphs and simple essays.
Transitions Use transitions to achieve the stated purpose.
Oral Reports
Individual and small group presentations Present information orally in class, individually and in small groups.

Required textbooks/materials

  • Fawcett, Susan, and Alvin Sandberg. Evergreen With Readings. 6th ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2000.
  • Standard course materials should include the following: notebook; pen (black ink); #2 pencil; two-pocket folder; pocket collegiate dictionary and thesaurus; and an IBM compatible, formatted, high-density disk.

Grading Scale

This class is a pass (SC) or fail (U) course.
Points can be added to the chapter average through: weekly journal, attendance; spelling average; pop quizzes; speeches; and Plato.
