COURSE DESCRIPTION:     

You will examine those provisions of the Bill of Rights which pertain to criminal justice.  Topics include: characteristics and powers of the three branches of government, principles governing the operation of the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights and the other Constitutional Amendments.

COURSE COMPETENCIES:  

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1.    Describe the characteristics and the powers of the three branches of government within the framework of the constitution

        a.  Compare the judicial, executive, and legislative branch of government

        b.  Identify the articles of the constitution which originates the powers of the government by designating the authority of the 3 branches

2.  Explain the principles governing the operation of the constitution

        a.  Describe the effect on the criminal justice system regarding due process rights

        b.  Cite various landmark supreme court cases that shaped citizens due process rights

3.  Define the Bill of Rights and the constitutional amendments

        a. Define unreasonable search and seizure under the 4th and 14th amendments

        b.  Define compulsory self-incrimination under the 5th amendment

        c.  Define due process and individual protections under the 5th, 6th, and 14th amendments

        d.  Define the right to counsel under the 6th amendment

        e.  Define cruel and unusual punishment under the 8th amendment

Grading Policy:            

The final course grade will be determined using the following measurement units:

Mid-term Examination 25%
Final Examination (Comprehensive) 25%
Participation and Quizzes 25%
Research Presentation and Report 25%

Grade Equivalency:            

Each grade will be based on 100 points. Scoring will be as follows:

90-100 points A
80-89 points B
70-79 points C
60-69 points D
00-59 points F

WORK ETHICS GRADE

Each student will receive a work ethics grade for this course.

Make up Policy:

WITHDRAWEL FROM COURSE(S):  A basic requirement of this course is that you participate in class and complete writing and reading assignments in a timely manner.  Keep in touch with me if you are unable to attend class or complete an assignment on time.  It is your responsibility to withdraw using the required procedures in the following circumstances: (1) if you should miss more than 10% of the classes (five hours per course for a five-contact hour course; seven hours for a seven-contact-hour course, etc.) or (2) if you realize that you must quit coming to class for reasons beyond your control. Your failure to withdraw yourself by getting an official Schedule Change Form signed by all necessary personnel may have long-term effects on your present and future academic, financial, and financial aid standing. If you have questions during the quarter about your continued attendance, please contact me or the dean of the school in which this class is being taught, or the DI/VPO if enrolled at a branch campus.

Withdrawal from On-Line Course(s):  A basic requirement of this course is that you participate in class and complete all assignments within the specified time.  Keep in touch with me if you are unable to log into your course or complete an assignment on time.  If you fail to demonstrate attendance by logging into your course and/or submitting required assignments for 7 consecutive days for reasons beyond your control, or realize that you must quit participating in class, it is your responsibility to withdraw using the required procedures.  Your failure to withdraw yourself by getting an official Schedule Change Form signed by all necessary personnel may have long-term effects on your present and future academic, financial, and financial aid standing.
 

If you decide to drop this course, you must complete an official drop form through admissions, or email Rebecca Walker (rwalker@augustatech,edu) and Denise Anderson (danderso@augustatech.edu) in Student Records, as well as the instructor and request a drop.  Once the email has been received, you will officially be dropped from the class.  If you have questions during the quarter about your continued attendance, please contact me or the dean of the school in which this class is being taught, or the DI/VPO if enrolled at a branch campus.

 Failure to demonstrate attendance by logging into your course and/or submitting required assignments for 7 consecutive days will result in you being administratively dropped.

Remediation and Additional Assistance: Any student who needs a testing or classroom accommodation on an individual basis due to a disability should inform the instructed at the beginning of the quarter. A classroom accommodation form is required from the ADA Coordinator/Disability Counselor.

Academic Honesty:  All assignments turned in will be original work of the student or team. To avoid plagiarism, students will use footnotes extensively to identify the source of their work. Where an infraction is identified the grade of “F” will be awarded for the course. The student will be dropped from the course and referred to the administration for further action.
