What to expect: The prerequisite for this course is SCT-100, which covered the basics of word processing. This course is designed to introduce the student to advanced word processing topics such as styles, form letters & mail merge, use of OLE technology, on-screen forms and management techniques for long documents. We begin the course in chapter 4 of the word processing text and will complete the text in about 5 weeks. The remaining 5 weeks are dedicated to desktop publishing. Each student will design a tear-off flyer, a three-fold brochure, and a catalog page. Additionally, the class will be split into equal groups. Each group is responsible for the creation of a 6 to 8 page newspaper. Students will have access to a digital camera, color scanner and a tabloid color laser printer. The PageMaker text will introduce students to page design as well as effective text and graphics placement. The final chapters of the PageMaker text demonstrate how to use PageMaker and directly publish Internet web pages. The production of the newspaper will reveal the day-to-day problems that publishers face. We also take a field trip to a newspaper press and see how they do design & layout and print the finished product. This course starts out slowly, but like a true publisher your team will be franticly racing to meet your deadline.
